the objective was to produce very high quality replicas of locomotives and, as the years progressed,
this was extended to coaches and other rolling stock. We decided to work from the beginning,
exclusively in Gauge 1 (1/32 scale). We chose this rather than the more traditional (at least in the U.K.)
10mm. scale because outside of the U.K., the rest of the world appeared to opt for 1/32 scale.
To underline the argument, 1/32 scale gave a near perfect scale/gauge relationship on 45mm. gauge track.
We have a core team of four or five personnel, with occasional guest workers ‘sitting in’ from time to time.
We believed from the beginning in trying to establish a degree of independence as far as components,
designs and finishing was concerned. We have always used castings from our own patterns, all of our artwork
and therefore photographic etchings are in the ownership of Finescale.
Finishing and especially painting can make an excellent model, superb. Similarly a bad paint job can make
a model unsaleable. We are very fortunate in that within our team, we have a superb painter and finisher
which means that we can offer quality, consistency and predictability of the finished article.
This not only covers overall finish but also accuracy of livery. We have never produced kits or sold our
parts as accessories. Our one focus is to deliver excellent products through courteous and attentive customer service.
We pride ourselves in that over 95% of our models are delivered, by arrangement, in person to the customer.
Coming back to the models, our locomotives are dead scale replicas of steam locomotives but with electrical drive.
The power source can be either conventional 2-rail pick up or radio control with the locomotive (or its tender)
containing the rechargeable cells. A sound system is also available thus adding to the overall realism.
Like our locomotives, our coaches are fully detailed internally and externally. In some cases, the vehicles have
internal lighting allowing a better appreciation of the interior detail. From the beginning, we wanted working
corridor connections, connectable vacuum. and steam pipes as well as electrical jumper cables.
We are enthusiasts building for a most discerning customer - you, it has to be right, OK is not good enough.
Consequently, all orders received are started as individual constructions.
We don’t pre-build or try to anticipate demand. This can sometimes dictate longer delivery times than we would like
to offer but we would rather produce a first quality product than even risk a sub-standard product.
Finally, we have an active product development programme which covers both locomotives and rolling stock.
